How to Create Your Own
Full-Body Workout Plan
Walk into the gym, head to the
dumbbells or
gym machines, do the same few moves you've been doing for a while, and then call it a day. Sound familiar? Us too.
Building your own workout is not only straightforward, but it's also important. "Programming gives you a purpose," says Noam Tamir, owner of TS Fitness in New York City. "Otherwise it's like going on a road trip without a map."
The easiest way to get started is to learn your basic movement patterns. The ones we'll include here are:
- Lower-body push, Hip hinge, Single-leg movement, Vertical push, Vertical pull H, Horizontal push, Horizontal pull
Once you get the hang of it, you'll realize there's a near endless number of exercises that fall into these patterns—and that's the beauty of designing your own workout. Sayonara, boredom.
How to use this list: Below we've provided a brief explanation of each movement followed by beginner and advanced exercise examples. Do at least 1 exercise from each section for a well-rounded workout.

PE STUDENTS:Each of the movements have a range of difficulty. Learn more about why certain exercises are recommended to create a balanced total body strength program. Many of them can be done with no (or little ) weight so be sure to focus on the proper technique. You might be already doing some ...try some out and/or comment on how your current strength activities match up.
I love the idea of a customizable workout!
ReplyDeleteWhat I like about this post is the link to the article that has short videos of the exercises. Videos are great because it is much easier to understand how the exercise should be executed. All of the exercises could be done in the home with minimal equipment, just dumbbells and a stretch band. Together, all of the exercises provide an overall workout for all the major muscle groups.
ReplyDeleteI like doing circuits, but you need to think through what exercises you should do to make sure that you get a balanced workout.
I'm more used to doing a swim workout for an hour where the coach creates the workout. In the gym, I need to think through what to do. This article provides a great routine that I can also change up a bit to keep it fresh!
It was interesting to read because it matched up a lot with what my sister told me to do, and a few of the exercises look a lot like what my physiotherapist told me to do last year. The article was nice to read, because it’s one of the only ones where they really show you exactly how you should be moving to do the exercise properly.
ReplyDeleteI really like how this article is very interactive because of the short videos. They give a quick and easy explanation.
ReplyDeleteFrom my module 3, I am growing fond of circuit exercises. I believe they are very fun and they are easy to note the progress with. This article makes up many great routines that we can customize.
