Gender, activity choices/bias, body image

Why Dudes Should Give Yoga a Try

PE students: Watch both or one of the videos and comment on anything that you think should be emphasized/highlighted from the videos, and /or is an important take away for you personally....perhaps in how you view exercise in relation to overall health?

  1. "If you keep pushing, you'll be strong enough to handle it. You'll be strong enough to handle anything." This quote captured me.
This is a very inspiring video to watch especially because there's such a 'mismatch' of who she is, what she is, and what she does. One wouldn't expect a tattooed, female powerlifter to intern at a State House and while that is a sad generalization, it's a prominent one. Something that I think should be emphasized is how successful she is in all parts of her life, thanks to the self-discovery she underwent when she began powerlifting and that beauty is not JUST about being petite and coy and taking up as little space as possible but is about what makes you confident and happy.

  2. Why Dudes Should Give Yoga a Try

As someone who often goes to yoga, I can attest to the fact that it's a rarity to see the opposite gender and have found that if/when they do come, they often seem very uncomfortable for the first 20 minutes or so. I think that for very 'manly' men it could seem especially daunting since yoga is as much an exercise for the spirit as it is for the body. This, to me, while possibly uncomfortable for them, is actually the #1 reason they should try yoga. For men who have machismo complexes, yoga could help out their mental health immensely and allow them to release and come to terms with emotions they may not want to show the world for fear of being regarded as girly.
Yoga also increases flexibility and therefores gives them a less likely chance of injuring themselves while doing the standard 'manly' workouts.
All in all, I think that both of these articles focus on self-image in relation to fitness and believe that smashing of stereotypes showcased in them should be highlighted.

  3. What impressed me about Molly is her courage and determination to pursue a male dominated sport such as power lifting and how it helped her become more confident both physically and mentally making her feel like she can do anything in life and even feeling empowered to help other young women struggling with their self esteem. Any difficult situation in life gets better by just doing it over and over again until it gets easier and/or accomplished. Gender should not be a reason to not try new things and enjoy life to the max because the only thing that matters is how proud you feel at the end.

  4. I decided to watch the video about molly and her powerlifting journey! I am just going to start by saying how incredible she is. She had made herself into a powerful woman and has stood up for what she believes in. One message I really took away from this video was about how she said you just need to push through and motivate yourself to new heights that you never thought were possible. She also made a huge point of saying how gender shouldn’t define you or how much you can accomplish. I could relate to this because there are some days I am exhausted and Im pushed to my limits but I need to push through to accomplish my fitness goals.

  5. I read this article and thought that I should give yoga a try, so I am going to find a good video and do a yoga workout this weekend. Maybe my mom will help me??? Yoga sounds like a good idea for stress reduction. It also requires strength, agility, and flexibility. I could improve in all of those areas.

The article states that men traditionally were practitioners of yoga, it is only in North America where it is more a female thing to do. I guess guys prefer to lift weights. Yoga does look a bit slow-moving. For me, that would be good. I also think the breathing exercises would be good to do.

I don't think any activities should be thought of as for only one gender. People should do activities that they enjoy and also try new things once in a while. I know that I get stuck in a routine, but thankfully the seasons actually break it up for me.

  6. I read the why dudes should give yoga a try, It honestly resonates well with my own personal views. I think there is such toxic masculinity in our world and that is something that is preventing young boys and old men from becoming there true potential. Not only just by stopping them from doing yoga but in expressing their feelings or the way they dress, how they cant do makeup because its a girls thing. yet things also go the other way girls cant do football because its a boys sport or that girls are weak and fragile and can only amount to cooking and cleaning. I also believe that as a society we are constantly growing and i hope for my kids they don't have to worry about gender stereotypes, not too mention the racism and fascism that still is very prevalent in our society. I wish these disgusting problems did not occur and that i think one day they wouldn't but there is always someone who doesn't want to change and have an open mindset.
