Inquiry Learning in P.E.

One of the reasons I like my job is the challenge to make Physical Education more personalized for each student.   And to move away from "teacher as director of knowledge" to "teacher as supporting students to pursue their own learning."

It certainly makes sense to create a course structure where students can do this.  It does present challenges for the teacher and students and my plan is to jump in and go for it even if I don't have a precise plan figured out yet.  This is an Inquiry Learning project for me!  I will present a number of options and ask you to take more direction for your own learning.  This also requires a common process where students document their learning in the various stages of Inquiry (Inquiry Learning Journal in PE 10.)

I also value the input of students in my learning project (how to transform this course into an Inquiry learning course) and look forward to your ideas / suggestions and feedback along the way.
So thank you and let's do this!

PE STUDENTS: Inquiry learning is about deeper learning in an area of personal interest that connects to the curriculum. What are some topics that interest you in relation to physical activity and performance?  How can we use technology to help pursue health and activity/performance goals? What are some questions you have about Inquiry learning in relation to your PE experience?

  3. At this point I am not looking for greater research in physical activities, however the knowledge is great for future use.

  4. I think inquiry learning is a more sustainable way of learning because it forces you to become engaged in what you're learning by asking questions, having discussions, and investigating. These will ultimately allow you to understand what you're learning better. A successful way for me to use iunquiry learning would be to question what muscles in my body are sore after playing a rugby game. I would ask myself questions like how I could properly stretch these muscles before and after games in the future and also what activities can help release some of the stiffness.

  5. Inquiry is a very good way to learn more about your passion by asking questions that will further increase your knowledge of what you love to do. Some inquiry questions that I have about dance are; How to prevent injuries? How to recover fast from injuries? How different styles of dance connect with one another.

  6. inquiry learning allows for everyone to get involved with the course. it allows for everyone to give their input which can allow one to get more involved.

  7. Inquiry Learning is an essential skill to learn. You start by asking questions, that will increase your knowledge.

A question I do have for playing hockey are that, How do I prevent cramps, or... how do I stretch before playing hockey?

  8. Some topics that interest me are, what are some ways that I can strengthen my body to perform optimally for my dancing? What are some ways I can recover my body after a hard day of physical activity? We can use technology to pursue health goals because, on youtube you can watch videos on how to workout, there are also apps for workouts you can do at home. A question I have about inquiry learning is, whats a good way to find answers for my inquiry learning?

  9. Inquiry learning is one of the main ways that I learn. I have a question and then I seek out the answer from multiple sources. I have some regular places to find out information online, but for PE questions, I can ask my mom, my trainer, my strength coach or swimming coach or look at our own home library that has oodles of kinesiology books. For PE 10, I needed to find out more about rhythmic movement activities since that is not part of my regular routine. My mom pointed me to resources online and even my aunt (who is a grade 3 teacher) told me about GoNoodle. I am also currently interested in nutrition, so I have been looking into that topic.

  10. I think the aspect of inquiry learning is very good and important because it gets us as the students to think about what we actually are interested in and what we want to learn. This means that we will most likely be more willing to answer our own questions and learn more that way. For example, a question I have is does what does junk food actually do to our bodies, and how can we try to eat healthier without having to spend money on expensive organic foods? I think the internet would be a very good tool in trying to find the answer to this.

  11. Some topics that interest me are nutrition, and what the ideal body type is for certain sports. I always like to think about what I am eating and I am curious that if you ate completely clean and healthy for a long time would your energy increase a lot and your performance? For some sports the ideal body type is short and muscular, or tall and lean. But I am curious if it goes deeper into body fat percentage, or shoe size and muscle density.

  12. Inquiry learning to me is a more personalised take on learning and growth, because you get to decide the main inquiry question that interests you and then find more information on it. And i think it will cause a reaction of learning something, actually understanding it and also remembering it,because I personally feel that we learn so much and if it's not taught to us in a way we understand then we will remember it for the section and the almost immediately forget about it because we don't actually care about the subject but we are taught to care about our grades instead and told that's learning. I think some inquiry questions related to my physical fitness would be like how can i get the most out my workouts?, what foods are actually good for me? and What foods will help me have a more productive workout? I think technology is a great educational tool because you can find almost all the answers to the questions you seek, but you also have to be careful and make sure it's coming from a credible source.

  13. I think that inquiry learning is beneficial because you're absorbing the information and asking meaningful questions. Inquiry learning is a form of active learning because you're engaged and taking initiative. Some topics that now interest me are aerobics, strength and dancing.

  14. Some topics that interest me with physical health is how workouts can be incorporated in daily life easily and smoothly, because with my hectic schedule I sometimes feel like I’m too exhausted to do a whole circuit. What specific workouts are there that are short but just as effective as a full circuit? I think technology can be used by showing students the variety of options there are for physical activity, not just doing sports or intense workouts. I also think it’s more motivational, because there’s less peer pressure. Right now, I have no specific questions about the Inquiry process. Maybe just how you would guide us with our goals?

  15. Some topics such as the aspect of inquiry learning interest me. I think it is a very important subject to people because it does a different kind of approach to learning. We are provided with opportunities to investigate it for ourselves. It focuses on students to teach how to think outside the box. Like how do I eat healthy? There are many different ways to figure that out, not just one.

  16. In relation to Phys.Ed a topic that interests me is muscle growth and the essentials to know when working out; a lot of teens or beginners don't really have a clue of what to do. Another topic is severely redistricting your caloric intake. To lose weight, you're going to need to do on a caloric defect, but there are individuals who take it to the extreme and eat under 900 calories a day. I think that health should be discussed and taught more not just to kids and teens, but to everyone.

  17. One topic that interest me about fitness and health is how to insure that the food we eat is delicious and nutritious. People complain that "healthy" food can never be delicious but I want to see if that really is the case. It would be interesting to research about different types of food and how it affects the body, and how to make healthy food into delicious meals.

  18. Inquiry learning is best for student because it gives us the opportunity to be open minded to learning new things, and to problem solve more efficiently.

  19. Inquiry learning engages students and helps them come up with a plan. It can be applied to physical activity in a lot of ways. Going to gym for example. Before you go to the gym you research different exercises that will help you grow different muscle groups. It also teaches you the technique behind different exercises so you dont hurt your self doing them. Inquiry learning is a great way to encourage students to get more involved.

  20. Inquiry learning is a teaching approach that encourages individuals to learn about their specific interests related to a topic. Some topics that interest me related to physical activity and performance goals are what yoga stretches are the most useful for strength, what fruits and vegetables provide the most nutrients and what is the best way to improve your cardio-vascular health. We can use technology to help pursue these questions by researching yoga exercises through youtube tutorials, nutrient values for food items on health websites and articles on ways to improve your cardio-vascular health right at home on your digital device. A question I have related to my PE experience would be what is the best way to help someone narrow down their inquiry question.

  21. I think that inquiry learning is very helpful. I think that most students enjoy it because they get to choose what to learn based on what interests them. I find, that with inquiry learning I am more willing to learn, because I am actually interested in the topic. I like learning based off of questions, and with inquiry learning, I find it easier for me to enjoy learning new things.

  22. Inquiry learning makes the student more engaged with the course material and is more fruitful as it gives him/her the opportunity to investigate, discuss, ask questions and grow in various aspects like community, personal and global. I would include the method of inquiry learning in my course by observing and asking myself about that which muscles in my body tend to cramp and strain themselves post workout. I will then research and make decisions about which post-workout and pre-workout routines should I incorporate that would target those muscles by stretching them. My goal would be to reduce the frequency of cramps and strains as much possible.

  24. A topic that interest me about fitness health is weight loss. Its quite interesting that we can workout for straight 5 months and be on a diet and we'd lose about 20 pounds! I used to work out everyday ever since quarantine started until October and the progress I've made is amazing. We can use technology to help pursue weight loss by searching up workout videos or even going to the gym, but during the situation we're in right now its hard to go to the gym, but there's many programs for free that help you with weight loss, for example, Chloe Ting has helped me lose about 30 pounds and I recommend her workouts. The question I have is that how do I stay motivated to keep my journey going?

  25. From what I know of it, inquiry learning is very helpful in terms of taking on a new subject to learn that may be of interest. Many people, not just students, learn by making connections between the subject and their own life or the lives of those around them. This makes people more willing to learn new things and makes it easier for them to enjoy learning.
Something that interests me is musical theatre, through that interest I can make a connection to this Physical Education course. I enjoy musical theatre, and by connection dance, I can use dance as one of my regular activities for this class. With this same interest, I would like to be singing while I dance which requires good cardiovascular health and lung capacity and such. This shifts my focus to mostly cardio and some flexibility work such as yoga, where you focus on breath work. These connections allow me to enjoy what I am doing in this class as I mentioned before.
I may use videos recorded by my directors for the show I am to be in next summer or videos I find online. I could also choose to use training programs (for weights, rowing machines, running or walking) or the breakdowns of dance from shows or film. We can also use technology to track our progress.

  26. For Module 2, I have elected to proceed with the "Option 2" which is the prescribed curriculum. Meanwhile, for Modules 3-5, I plan to pursue an inquiry project which will involve investigating various golf training aids, including Speed Sticks, Trackman Combine and Project One Putt. I may also include some mental performance practices including breathing techniques, journal writing, and visualization in one of the Modules.

  27. Some topics that interest me are biking with friends, Hikes and fast pace walks. We can use technology to help pursue my performance goals by keeping track of all my activity and asking questions. I am really looking forward to being able to do my own types of personal physical activity.

  28. I have decided to do a speed stick project for Module 3, while continuing to use my golf training for Module 2. I have been following a specific shoulder strengthening program on a daily basis, and recording my swing speeds every 4 days. I plan to do this for one month, while also researching the science behind speed sticks.

  29. Inquiry learning is very helpful for student because they can personalize their progress and learning.

  30. Inquiry is a great way for students to become really engaged with their learning. When students have the chance to study things are passionate about, the deeper they go with their learning. If I were to do am inquiry for PE, it would relate to dance. Some questions I could find more information about are: Does incorporating regular strength training in to your workout week, enable you to perform better when dancing? Does strength training make you perform better for certain types of dance, or all dance? What are the best ways to prevent injuries with dance?

  31. Inquiry learning is a great way to " get out what you put in ".It gives you a chance to be more responsible in your learning and have more creative freedom. Some topics that interest me are what are the best training workouts for beach volleyball and indoor. also how athletes with knee issues workout and stay fit but don't worsen their knees.

  32. I think inquiry learning is especially important for physical health because everyone’s body types are different and the nutrition and activities best suited are also different. For certain body types, you might want to look at activity level and fat percentage to determine a healthy diet, and that’s different for everyone. Inquiry in PE is often related to your own fitness, your workouts, diets, and results. Technology can be great for keeping track of progress and also to answer questions you might have about your own body type and lifestyle. For me, I would like to find ways to incorporate fun in physical activities to better motivate myself when exercising.

  33. The inquiry learning makes us can choose the topic we like to set the goal and achieve it. Through the process of inquiry learning, students can research deeper about their topic to find the joy of learning.

  34. For me I think that inquiry is a great way of having students thing out side of the box instead of just following instructions. I am also hoping to take my time and enjoy my schedule ever day.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Inquiry is helpful for students so that they can personalize their learning plans. A sport that I would be interested in would be swimming and ice skating . If I was doing a PE inquiry, I would do a swimming and skating inquiry. My questions would be does swimming improve strength, and does off-ice training help with performance aspects such as times and height? How could I improve in a healthy and efficient way?

  36. I think inquiry based learning is a great way to become more engagaed in your learning, because it forces you to ask questions and investigate what you are learning. This will then allow students to learn better ar they are more immersed in the topic. If I were to do an inquiry in relation to physical activity and performance, I would ask: Are there certain foods that are better for certain workouts? How can I decrease soarness in my muscles, even if I do a cool down? I think technology is a great resource because it can answer all of these questions, although sometimes it's hard to believe who you can trust, which is why a professional opinion from a teacher and/or a doctor are always better.

  37. Inquiry learning keeps students motivated by personalizing their learning. Studying something you are passionate about keeps you engaged and leads to goal setting as well as bettering yourself for your interests. I would want to learn what parts on my body I use for rugby so that I can keep myself strong and improve my skills during this time of not playing.

  38. Inquiry learning can be very useful in a way that students can become more indulged in education. They will be able to have a better experience. It is also unique and personalized to every student so that everyone is not doing the same thing.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Inquiry learning is great because you are asking meaningful questions about a certain topic which will further your understanding of said topic. It also allows students to become more engaged with their learning, and especially if it is something they are passionate about.

  40. For me I think that inquiry is a different way to do things more efficiently and made to put in more effort as well as making it more towards the students favour

  41. I believe inquiry learning is a great way to give students adaptable topics that are flexible for their personal interests for each individual’s lifestyle. Personally, I love skateboarding and am happy that it contributes to PE online. Inquiry learning gives students more room to grow as they can target personal topics, and engage in a class without feeling like simply a participant.

  43. I love fitness so inquiry learning is important and helps learn about fitness and deeper meaning about fitness. People can become more involved and passionate. Technology helps a lot in fitness. You can do workouts and follow other people that do it. Learn from other peoples mistakes so you don't make the same. Learn new exercises every day.

  44. i think it helps students make their own connections about what they learn. Their curiosity helps them engage and gain a deeper understanding of topics and content, instead of primarily memorizing and recalling rules, ideas or formulas.
