The Benefits of Fitness Fusion

What Is Fitness Fusion?  By Paige Waehner
Fitness fusion is pretty much the fitness industry's way of beating boredom when it comes to exercise. No more 3 sets of this exercise and 2 sets of that.  No more running for an hour and lifting weights the next day.  No more separation of cardio and strength or even stretching and core work.
Now, we're combining things, sometimes in crazy ways.
Forget riding on a stationary bike for an hour--why not try Cycle Karaoke or trying weight training while you're on a treadmill?

The Benefits:

  • Target a variety of aspects of fitness like strength, balance, stability, core strength, agility, endurance and more, making your workouts more functional
  • Combining moves from a variety of disciplines like yoga, pilates, boot camp, cardio, strength and more keeps your body and mind constantly challenged
  • Keep you from getting bored
  • Challenge your muscles in different ways
  • Provide fast, effective workouts for people with busy schedules
  • Offer new ways to exercise and continually improve your strength, fitness, and overall conditioning
PE STUDENTS:  In what ways do you currently have "fitness fusion" in your exercise activities? In what ways could you combine/add/ revise your current approach to add more "fitness fusion" Open the Link below and review/try out at least one of the suggested workouts.  Write about your experience in a PE Blog post response in your module: Which workout(s)?  how did you complete/adapt the challenge?  What did you like and/or not really like about it? How has this experience /knowledge affected your outlook about exercise. How could you add more "fitness fusion" to your weekly exercise routine?

  1. In our acrobatics class at my dance studio 70% of the class is conditioning based. However the teacher makes it "fun" and less boring. We play conditioning games for example “Thunder Struck”. Mr. Jason plays the song thunder struck which is 5 minutes long and we have to run to one side of the studio and back and whenever we hear the word “thunder” in the song we have to go down and do a v snap and when it says “thunder struck” we have to do burpees. It is a very hard game but it is a lot more fun than just doing regular boring conditioning. It challenges us in 2 out of the three fitness components (strength and cardio) as well. Another game that we play is for example Sally Up which is your lying on your back with your feet hovering above the floor and every time the song says “Bring Sally Up” we have to hold ourselves in a v snap position and when it says “Bring Sally Down” we have to lower our feet just above the ground. If our feet touch we have to restart. These games are a fun way of conditioning that I do on a weekly basis. I tried the yoga on the ball fitness fusion workout. I found that it was more challenging than regular yoga and it pushed me further.

Making exercising fun and challenging is a great thing to do! When I get bored from just doing plain old (sit-ups) and (push-ups) I do something fun like, "One handed push ups on my left side of my body and for something like street hockey, instead for just running and shooting pucks/balls in the net, I go to the dollar store and I but a blow up duck as a target or water filled balloons on the posts to see if I can hit them dead on.

  4. Doing exercises like, sit-ups and regular cardio, can get kind of boring for most people. For me I love working out so I don't get that bored with doing plain exercises. I know a lot of people from my dance studio who groan when the teacher tells us to do sit-ups, so she makes it more fun. We do something called circuit, there are 5 stations and we rotate every 1 minutes, then every 45 seconds and then every 30 seconds and we're done. The first station is step ups onto a bench changing legs every time. the next station is abs, we can do plank, crunches, bicycle, etc. The third station is wall sit, The next is sprints across the room, back and forth. And the last station is handstands against the wall. After we do all of circuit, we all get very tired and breathe very heavily. Dance is also a very fun/ creative way to get active, in any style.

  5. I decided to pick Core and Flexibility Workout to Strengthen Your Body to try from the list. I chose it for a couple of reasons. First, I always like to see photos of the exercise (and preferably a video) so that I can make sure that I understand what to do. The main reason that I chose this was because increasing my core strength and working on getting more flexible are two important goals for me. Both will help my swimming performance, but they are also good areas to keep working on for my inquiry focus on Active & Healthy Living. There are 15 exercises and stretches and many of them are in my regular routine. The woodchops might be a challenge due to equipment needs, but if you have a band, you can probably rig something up. New to me were the exercises with the smaller ball while sitting on a big ball--Med Ball Rotations on the Ball! It's always good to learn a few new exercises that can easily be done at home with very little equipment.

  6. I decided to try out the yoga ball exercise. I choose this particular fusion fitness exercise because I have very little experience doing yoga and I wanted to try something new. My exercise routines usually consist of doing only cardio and weight training, therefore this exercise was somewhat of a struggle. Throughout this exercise I stretched muscles that I hadn't exercised in a long time. In particular the seated spinal rotation was a challenge because I found it hard to keep disciplined throughout my sets. Overall I enjoyed using the yoga ball to exercise because it was a welcomed change of pace, although it was sometimes challenging I plan to use the yoga ball to improve my balance. I can see how regularly using the yoga ball is equally important as other types of exercise and how it can help prevent cramping and soreness.

  7. My current workout excersises don't have any form of "fitness fusion", as it is litterally just "3 sets of that and 2 sets of that". However I do remember a few years ago when I did a lot of taekwondoe, and that was quite like a fitness fusion since we always did a varity of excercises in oe day. I tried the 10 minute Metabolic Conditioning Workout, and I used a milk jug filled with water instead of a weight. It was, alright I guess. Firstly, I did adapt it so it would be a bit easier, like not going as far down when doing the lunges. I didn't really like anything about it, though I have to say it was a bit more fun then just regular workouts. I havn't had as much of a motovation to work out as much as I've had before, so maybe stuff like this can help. I think I can start adding workouts like these and others like it from the website on to my module assignments.

  8. I want to do the yoga on the ball, this can make my muscular flexibility becomes better. I have used yoga balls before, but I didn’t last long. So, this time I want to retry it. I think the flexibility of my feet is too hard, I want to use this chance to improve my muscular flexibility of my feet.

  9. I like the idea of Cycle karaoke. I do ride the stationary bike while listening to music I feel like that would work for me. Great way to tap into your grove, and power through something that you may find a little difficult. It might help me move through my modules a bit faster. I like it.

  10. I think the key to better fitness is to not get stuck in the same things, our bodies learn and the repetitiveness of an exercise becomes part of muscle memory. Once its a muscle memory our bodies are use to it and don't have to challenge or work as hard. This becomes easier on our body to perform. Fusion Fitness is allowing our bodies to be challenged, adding weights like ankle weights or thera bands can mix things up. Focusing on different muscle groups can change things too. This is how I keep my dancer training challenging. I work a lot on balance and flexibility and use things to make me unbalanced to help achieve this.

  11. I think fitness fusion is a great way of escaping the repetitiveness and boredom and that low motivational energy we can sometimes carry with us while working out in any field of fitness. Like another student had mentioned how he used milk jugs filled with water as an example for there comment, I to have done something similar. I was once on vacation in Mexico and I had no means of getting any strength exercise. I had acquired 2 empty 2 liter bottles and filled them up with sand I used them as dumb bells to get my daily exercise in.
